managed to successfully change my lifestyle. sleep 11-12 and wake at ~8plus. no longer 3am and and 12pm. feels pretty good this way. to have a filling breakfast every morning while reading the papers.

broke the change yesterday though. slept at 3am. though i still woke at 8.30am to go for class at 9. was rushing econs assignment. sigh. i need to set another goal. another change- stop procrastinating; start work early. I'll use the guys as examples. They finish assignments a wk before due dates AND COME KNOCK ON OUR DOOR THE DAY BEFORE TO BRAG ABOUT HOW THEY HAVE NOTHING TO DO.

i'd like that too ;)!

we've been eating much of our home cooked meals because its much cheaper really. and the groceries are not expensive. cheap but tastes pretty damn good! chicken drumsticks are huge. the thighs are very sweet and tender. yummy. hee. surprisingly we're still alive and kicking. but yea. ^^

uh that picture's us playing with the frozen egg. it became ice. and even cracked. hahah. because its put right under where the cold air comes out from. hard to explain but that's the case. thankfully the other eggs are fine. only the single one that was directly under that cold air. hmmm.

dinner takes about 2 hrs now. half the time its cooking and washing up. the other half is spent talking nonsense with the rest of them. pretty friendly people we have here.

ahh thats hx. we were heading to a free concert by the melbourne symphony orchestra.

concert was pretty alright. hahaha. we took quite a long time to reach
because we can't read the map and tell directions for nuts! we managed to reach and watched a show by the melbourne
symphony orchestra. pretty good really. its hard to explain theatmosphere. its super nice. it has this HUGE HUGE lawn and people just laid there with picnic mats and basket and wine and sandwiches andwatched the concert in the cool wind under the stars. hmmm. hard to explain la. can only feel when there. very good experience i would say. hahaha. plus its free! we're such cheapos. we took the free shuttle down. its a city shuttle that operates on certain times. half way through the show at 8.40 we had to go back to the free tram stop to catch the last free tram. at 9. hahaha. the last free city shuttle service is
supposed to be at 9. so we took. then at about 9.05 the tram stopped. hahahah. cause its working hour is over. so we had to find our way back from whereever we were. to save 3 bucks each from the tram we decided to walk. hahah.a there are maps all over here so its pretty easy to find our way. we passed this lygon street which is kinda 'little italy'. damn many good food and the atmosphere is superb. cannot describe. we were enjoying our stroll so much. hahaha. if everyone knew how to enjoy life like the australians there would be world peace seriously. and prob no economic crisis. hahaha. they're all such happy people. random people will just go 'how's your day' on the streets. hahah. pretty interesting actually. hee.

went to do my teeth today.
first time in four years! yes yes very gross i know.

Morton's of Chicago-The Steakhouse!

its located and mandarin oriental.
4th storey. fine dining. great food.

Had the Cajun Ribeye Steak. Cooked medium rare.
It was a huge portion. The plate was pretty big and the steak stretched from one end to another.
Halfway into the meal my jaws were tired from chewing. HAHA.

The meats tender and juicy. Outside crispy. Inside raw. Great combi. The beef was sweet. With the right amount of fats. Didn't need any sauce to go with it cause its so sweet so succulent just like that. Yum Yum.

Dad ordered the onion soup for the starters. Looooooooveee it.
Onion soup! Yet very tasty. Thick and sweet. Side had baked melted cheese. Don't know what ingredients they put but woahhh its the best onion soup. ((:

oh forgot to mention the bread. THE HUGE BREAD before dinner was served.
HAHAHAHA. we finished the huge bread before dinner came. HEHE. love bread. love good bread. doesn't look like bread though. looks like an igloo.

went to bowl with tau marcus and hx yesterday. my arms and legs hurt today man. wtf. hahaha. lousy crap. sigh.

dinner was at thai express. the waiter cheated me. asked him for the mild dishes. he told me the green curry is pretty mild. then 'actually most are pretty mild'. okay. so i ordered a green curry and tomyam. (had a craving for tomyam). damn it it was fking spicy i swear. that idiot. shall nv trust him agn. haha. cld feel my spiced up tummy and bowel soon after. sigh.

A SINGAPOREAN couple accused of distributing anti-Islamic comic books admitted to police that they sent out the publications and apologised profusely, a court heard yesterday.
The pair, who were attending the Berean Christian Church at the time of the alleged offences, said in statements to investigators earlier this year that they only wanted to spread Christianity.

Ong Kian Cheong, 49, and his 45-year-old wife, Dorothy Chan Hien Leng, are currently on trial for sedition.

bad bad year for qantas.

SYDNEY - THE captain of a Qantas Airbus A330 carrying 168 passengers to Singapore had to shut down an engine and turn back to Perth after an oil warning light flashed, the airline said on Saturday.
The plane flew back to the west Australian city on one engine after the mid-air drama on Friday. Passengers were rescheduled on a replacement flight that took off nearly five hours late.

'Initial inspections by engineers indicate that a fault with the engine starter motor could have led to the engine oil problem,' Qantas spokesman David Cox told the Sydney Morning Herald.

The incident was the latest in a series of problems suffered by Australia's troubled national airline in recent months.

Last week two Qantas jumbos were damaged when they collided on the ground at a maintenance base.

In October, a computer glitch caused a Qantas plane to do a 200-metre mid-air nosedive, injuring more than 70 people, with some suffering broken bones.

In July, a Qantas Boeing 747-400 made an emergency landing in Manila after a mid-air blast caused by an exploding oxygen bottle punched a hole in the fuselage during a flight from Hong Kong to Melbourne. -- AFP

1st day)

Highlight. Penguins. Tiny puny ones. too bad no photos can be taken. it was great! cute little penguins came to shore once the sun set. (which means i got to see the sun set) awesome. xD

Rex's school + mine. I think he's school is pretty cool, at a quiet suburb, pretty quite town 1 hr away from melb city. but quite nice to walk down the streets and live in a house down the road.

i forgot to take pictures. so can't show.

academic programme's damn good, average's about 36 with 200++ students. their highest score's always 44/45. Full IB school, wireless campus throughout.

but bro doesn't seem to like the idea of a boarding school saying its too restrictive. owells.

3) Third day- crisis day.

we were kicked outta our hotel so we had to search for one.
melb city's hotel, though many were all fully booked.

had to stay at an backpackers apartment. found it like at 5pm. HAHA. after a whole day of search. its pretty cool actually! common bathroom and toilet though. but still okay. :)

walked around melb city, leg almost broke.
went to victoria market. quite an interesting sight.

bumped into florence and jocelyn. what a surprise.

went to see apartments, unilodge, melbuni. the campus is huge. until now i still don't know where is where. just the few most impt buildings. HAHA.

i don't go for smoke breaks. usually 0-1 toilet break in that 10-12hrs i work.

and i get the bloody same pay as the bloody smokers who go off for 45mins smoke break. fking unfair can. smoke, gossip and diss the others.

if you take 10 mins every hour, multiply it by 10 hrs i work and its 100 mins.

To plan or design requires the imagining of worlds yet to exist. Drawings and models undertaken with analogue or digital media operate as virtual environments that articulate proposals for environmental change in the physical world. An understanding of how media shape real environments is the aim of this intensive foundation year subject. A series of lectures will introduce students to the range of spatial media and techniques used to develop design concepts and planning strategies. The emphasis will be on developing knowledge of the critical relationship between media and outcomes, and how tools and techniques encourage or constrain possibilities. Concluding each lecture, students will be introduced to self teaching modules that will enable experimentation with media and techniques typically used in design and planning.

Course work consisting of: analogue/digital drawing and modeling 40% (assessed weekly); critical review of lectures 1000 words in total 20% (assessed weekly); final project using mixed media 40% (due in the end-of-semester examination period).

'La Serenissima': The Myth of Venice

This intensive four-week study abroad subject will be taught in Venice and examines in detail the many aspects of the so-called 'Myth of Venice'. The rulers of Venice in the Renaissance self-consciously fashioned their city's image and institutions as representative of the most stable and serene government in Europe. Students will examine the extensive historiography of this 'myth', the role of print media in its transmission, as well as its expression in the rituals, art and literature of the city. Students will also examine the darker consequences of prioritising stability in Venetian society including expansion onto the 'terrafirma', the Jewish ghetto, and the infamous Officers of the Night. Students will complete this subject with a deeper understanding of cultures other than their own and of ways of interpreting the past utilising a range of media.

Anthropology explores the different ways people live their lives. In this subject, an introduction to foundational knowledge in the discipline, students will be exposed to a variety of social and cultural forms around the world and the methods and theories developed to understand them as diverse expressions of a shared human condition. Topical issues that will be encountered include how different peoples around the world experience and react to pleasure, suffering and death; use ritual, religion and magic to understand and change their worlds; organise their sexual and family lives and their friendship networks; create and maintain their identities – individual, gendered, ethnic and youth sub-cultural; and maintain and resist the relations of power in which they are all enmeshed. On completion, students will have developed a foundational knowledge of the discipline of anthropology. They will also have developed an appreciation of both anthropology’s distinctiveness and its complementarity with other social science disciplines such as sociology, criminology, geography, political science, history, philosophy and gender studies. Finally, and most importantly, they will, through cross cultural comparison, understand the peculiarity of their own taken-for-granted ways of being.

Assessment An ethnographic observation exercise of 1000 words 25% (due week 6), a one hour class test 25% (in week 10) and a 2000 word essay 50% (due at the end of semester). This subject has a hurdle requirement of attendance at a minimum of 8 tutorials.

From Burma to Japan, Manchuria to Thailand, the Cook Islands to Cambodia and Tibet, this subject will explore histories of Asia, the Pacific and the West's involvement in these areas from the 16th century to the present, with an emphasis on 20th century history. The subject will be divided into three thematic groups: early contact between Asia, the Pacific and the West; colonisation, resistance and the struggles for independence; and the decolonisation process and recent crises in Asia and the Pacific. Questions explored over the course of the subject include: What was the nature of early contact between the West and Asia and between the West and the Pacific? How did contact with the West transform states and societies in Asia and the Pacific? What policies did colonial powers (including Japan) implement? What forms did resistance to these policies take? How did colonisation and eventual decolonisation exacerbate racial, ethnic and national tensions, and how have these factors influence states and societies in Asia and the Pacific today? Finally, we will look at the role (if any), human rights, sanctions, and economic trade have had on the West's relations with countries in Asia and the Pacific today, particularly China (Tibet), Myanmar, Fiji, and Cambodia.

Consequently, astronomy has not only become the oldest field in the systematic study of nature, it gives an opportunity to compare these studies among different civilizations. This subject investigates the development of astronomical thought in various cultures ranging from East and South Asia via the Middle East and Europe to Latin America. Central questions will be: How were the same phenomena interpreted in different cultures? How was the relation between sun, moon and earth regarded? How were astronomical observations done? What functions did astronomy have in culture? How was astronomical knowledge transmitted in cultural exchanges? Why did early modern Europe become the place that developed the idea of modern science? What was the relevance of the heliocentric planetary system - with the earth revolving around the sun - in this development? The subject will thus give an overview of the genesis of our modern world view while offering reflections on cross-cultural studies.

Two 2000 word essays 30% each (one due mid semester, the other due at the end of semester) and an oral examination 40% (during the examination period).

The focus of the subject is the ongoing social, economic and political transformation and the impacts of the reforms on China's people and environment. The subject covers three sets of topics: China's many faces (generation conflicts; ethnic minorities, rural China; physical landscapes and environment; Chinese women - "half sky"); China in transition (large is not beautiful, population policy and one-child only; China's reform model; open door policy and geography of "Made in China"; population mobility and urbanisation; and spatial shifts of development focus); China's major challenges (AIDS/HIV, geography of commercial sex industry; income polarisation; corruption and "Guanxi" with Chinese characteristics; "get rich quickly" and environmental cost; development and resource demand; and Three Gorges Dam resettlement).

Written work totalling 4000 comprising a 10- minute tutorial presentation 10%, a 1000 word tutorial paper 25% (due two weeks after tutorial presentation), and a 3000 word essay or research proposal 65% (due end of semester).

This subject is a philosophical examination of whether God exists. What arguments are there in favour of the existence of God? How good are they? What objections are there to the existence of God? How good are they? We'll concentrate on various specific issues, such as whether recent scientific discoveries about the origins and nature of the physical universe count in favour of the view that the physical universe was designed by some intelligent being.

A written assignment of 2000 words 50% (due mid-semester), a 2-hour closed-book written examination 45% (held at the end of semester) and tutorial participation 5%.

Prerequisites A least one first-year single-semester philosophy subject, or permission from the Head of School or subject coordinator.

This subject deals with two major topics in the theory of knowledge. We will consider such central epistemological questions as these. What is knowledge? Do we have knowledge? How do we know? These questions will be explored by considering a number of traditional and contemporary approaches to epistemological issues, such as scepticism,empiricism, rationalism, naturalism, and reliabilism. Students should gain a sound understanding of the philosophical problems relating to knowledge, as well as the major approaches which have been proposed in response to these problems.

A 1500 word essay valued at 30% due about mid-semester, and a 2500 word essay valued at 70% due at the end of semester.

This subject is concerned with the tension between the freedom implied by consciousness and the constraints imposed by nature, culture and society. Freedom of thought and action arises from our capacity for reflection and imagination. And yet as natural, social and historical beings we appear as selves to be constrained by our biological and psychological needs and our social and historical position. The extent to which these factors constrain or merely influence our lives will be examined. The first half of the subject will be a study of key themes in Sartre's Being and Nothingness, particularly his account of human freedom. We will then consider the consequences for such freedom from consideration of Althusser's account of ideology and Foucault's account of power. On completion of the subject, students should be able to recognise the distinctive nature of philosophical problems and their significance for other areas of thought; know how to go about working through such problems; be in a position to engage with more philosophical material and to apply their philosophical skills in other disciplines.

WH was pissed at me today for not eating with him.
he has asked for very long for me to eat with him. for lunch, after work, etc.
offered to send me home after work and stuff but has nv agreed to him.

he asked again, happily telling me they didn't come for work and i have to eat with him.
agreed since i wouldn't have any eating buddies for lunch.

by 4 i was hungry and i told him so.
but another bunch of colleagues went to eat and we had to wait for them.
they took quite a while and i was sooooo bored cos business was so slow today.
called dad and asked rents if they wld be eating out with bro. they said yes, so got them to pick me up early so we could have dinner tgt.

told WH i wouldn't be eating with him at 5 just after calling my dad, told him i would be going home early and i wldn't be taking a break for lunch. (we are not paid for lunch hour, and yes, usual lunch time's at 4-5)

so after that he showed this really black face and his good buddy noticed too.

im afraid, because time flies so fast.

in 3-4 months am flying off, yet to another foreign land.
have friends who have done so, they seem to be coping really well, but few words on their blogs wouldn't exactly capture all their feelings. i wish them well.

there are so many things that are swimming in my head now, i can't sleep.
it has been like this for the past few days.

because life's so uncertain.
i feel so lost.

so bro has not decided where he'd be studying. he is damn suay la. i wouldn't want to be in his position.
i know he's not too happy about how everything is not going too well now. and i can't do anything to help him.

just got out of my fully paralysed state, where i had to lie in pain, with a hot water bottle on my tummy.

am now in a semi paralysed state; at least i am able to sit up and use the computer. but the hot water bottle is still on
my tummy as the pain's still there.

oh went down to idp today because there was a foundation fair for students who wants to study pre uni in aussie.
so bro's myp couldn't get him into trinity college. reason being that it is equivalent to year 10 and they require him to be year 11. yep! apparently if you take the US papers you'd have to do year 11 too. only GCE O's don't need. People with siblings still in that school and does not wish to study till he finishes ib should just leave the school. mum is regretting she didn't put rex into sas or british school to take the o levels instead.

jt, my mum got a list of ib schools in nsw in case your brother wishes to study near you/with you.
guess if he studies in aussie he has two alternatives. one is to study ib there, the other is to do their australian cert, vce thingi and then get into a foundation college, for eg, unsw foundation college when he is of the age.

I REFER to the report, "Seven major religious groups with annual incomes of over $10 million each and who heads them" (Sept 11). I am awestruck at the payscale of local church pastors. Many are paid more than chief executive officers (CEOs) of business entities. These churches are now like mega corporations. The question, however, is whether church pastors can justifiably draw huge salaries from the tithes and offerings which are meant for God's work. As a former City Harvest Church and Faith Community Baptist Church goer, I have given my fair share of offerings, hoping to see that 90 per cent of the money could be spent doing God's work. Little did I realise that much of it has been used to fuel the lavish lifestyles of the church founders.

To circumvent the misappropriation of donors' funds, there should be clear guidelines on what church pastors should be paid and the ceiling for their salaries and allowances. From what I understand, these churches make it mandatory "in the name of God" for all true Christians to contribute 10 per cent of all their earnings to be pledged as tithes for the church. I remember these church leaders telling me that one would be "robbing God" if 10 per cent is not rightfully returned into God's kingdom (based on the scripture of Micah). However, the grey area is that the Bible did not specify what percentage the church leaders should draw from the collections. It is then up to the authorities to determine what is the ceiling that church pastors should draw in remuneration. Many mega church leaders feel that it is their right as God's ambassadors and spiritual leaders to command high salaries for doing the ultimate, which is God's work, but do they actually have a God-given right to exploit that? To draw a salary of $2 million a year would be considered excessive for a pastor who draws from funds given by the public, but to draw $20 million to $35 million per annum is ridiculous.

ONE of Singapore's mega churches is raising its investment in a new lifestyle hub at one-north, where it will hold church services in the future.

knocked off early today. at 8. but went out, so back at ard 10.30.

it was a pretty interesting day today at work.
because it was the sg's table tennis match that determined if sg wld have an olympics medal.
many random people came into the centre because starhub has 2 rather big flat screen tvs playing cable stuff. wooots! i love my work place. so everyone was crowding around the tvs watching.

there's another 3rd one outside the centre. when i went for break, i saw a crowd outside watching. HAHAHAH.
this is bloody interesting. everytime sg score's everyone shouted and cheered. this's like the best fking moment.
some people say they don't feel proud bout sg entering the finals, that its not a big deal, that all the players are chinese- from china. but seeing that small sg flag there with a higher score, winning, the players wearing the sg shirt, playing for the sg team just makes me feel so proud of them, feel proud for the country that trained them.

woots. i feel so patriotic. HAHAHAHAHA.

and yes, i was not slacking alright.
just that there were not too many staff on that particular day so there would be short breaks between and i would be able to catch the olympics time and again. too far though, couldn't see the score.
