--------- Ahh, good luck to him. SYLVESTER Wee, 17, has faltered twice at the last hurdle of an International Tennis Federation tournament. The Raffles Junior College student has lost in the final of a Grade 4 event in Brunei in March and again in September. But he is aiming to put that right at the Grade5 Singapore International Junior Championships starting tomorrow. The tournament is part of the ITF circuit for amateurs, which is one rung below the Association of Tennis Professionals tour. The top girls' seed is Jessica-Marie Agra from the Philippines. Sylvester, who yesterday repeated his 2005 national triumph, is the top boy. He has been encouraged by his play at a higher-level event. 'I'm playing pretty well, and reached the last 16 of a Grade 3 tournament in Kuching last week,' said Sylvester, who hopes to turn professional one day. 'But my aim is to go as far as possible, I don't want to put too much pressure on myself.' This is the fourth straight year that Singapore is hosting an ITF Grade 5 event. A total of 113 boys and 71 girls are entered for the U-18 tournament at the Kallang Tennis Centre. Singapore's Abdul Hakim Jamaludin and Leong Chee Jun are defending their boys' doubles crown. |
